Recently, the Milford Police Department announced that a 27-year old man on bond of the Oakland County Circuit Court, removed his GPS tether, and fled the area. The man is facing a 15-year felony for criminal sexual conduct charges involving a 13 year old victim.
The man was originally charged, but released from jail with a GPS tether device, which would allow police to track his location. There is now an active warrant for the man for a violation of his bond conditions.
Judges have the option of ordering a GPS tether (at the defendant's expense) in lieu of putting a defendant in jail; for the most part this is an excellent option to save the county money, and for defendant's to be out of jail to assist in their own defense. If you've been charged with a crime in Michigan, and the judge is considering setting an unattainable bond, ask your attorney about the possibility of wearing a GPS tether.
