There will be a heightened police presence on the roads for drunken driving enforcement across Washtenaw County New Year's Eve, officials said.
“We’ll have multiple drunk driving details,” said Trooper Beth McLaughlin of the Michigan State Police, Brighton Post.
Officers will also keep an eye out for reckless drivers, she said.
Drivers with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher can be arrested for operating while intoxicated, which can have very expensive ramifications, McLaughlin said.
When all is said and done, a drunken driving arrest could cost someone between $8,000 and $10,000, she added.
“A cab ride may be expensive, but it’s cheaper than a drunk driving ticket,” McLaughlin said.
The Michigan State Police generally patrol the major area roadways like U.S. 23, I-94 and M-14. But deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office will also be stepping up patrols on other roads, according to Sgt. Geoff Fox.
“We’re increasing our patrols focusing on traffic safety and making sure everyone has a good safe evening,” he said.
Police hope people plans accordingly for a responsible night of celebrating, such as having a designated driver or calling a cab.
“Take it slow and easy,” Fox said. “There could be an increased number of people on the road.”
McLaughlin said people can even be too intoxicated to drive when their blood alcohol content is under .08. It depends on a number of variables, including weight and metabolism.
Ann Arbor police said they will have their usual road patrol out on New Year's Eve, but warned people to exercise caution when celebrating.
"Use a designated driver," said Sgt. Mike Scherba.
