Ann Arbor Minor in Possession - Proactive MIP Approach
Be Proactive Before Trial and Sentencing
Sometimes my client undergos a private alcohol assessment from a certified therapist. This may prevent surprises later about any problems the minor may have with substance abuse. It is important to determine, before the probation officer does, if the minor has an alcohol or other substance abuse problem and how serious it is. Being fully informed of the extent of such issues will help you make an effective “game plan” for handling the case.
The need for additional support might be indicated by the assessment and be useful for negotiating a plea and might include counseling, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and submitting to random drug testing.
I provide the minor and the parent or guardian with information about local treatment options and resources in Ann Arbor.
I have my clients begin community service immediately. This will help keep you out of further trouble and also be useful at sentencing if you have already begun and shown committed participation in community service. Senior citizen centers, nationally recognized organizations such as the Salvation Army, and community organizations such as hunger centers are always looking for young volunteers.
